The Illinois interstate system is over 50 years old. The gas tax in Illinois hasn't been raised since 1990. Currently Illinois collects 19¢ for every gallon of gas. Originally, all money received from the gas tax funded transportation. At this time roughly 11¢ are being diverted to other needs. This equals $690 million in diversions every year.
Unemployment in Illinois stands at 8.6%, the highest in 15 years. Our families and businesses suffer the consequences of failing transportation. We need to get our families working again.
